| Dear Curse's-2-You: About a year ago, I rented an apartment from a lady who insisted that no pets had lived there for about 5 years. You see, I’m very allergic to fleas and mosquitoes, so I’m very careful about where I move. Anyway, after I moved in, I started getting bitten like crazy almost immmediately. One of my neighbours told me that the last tenant had owned 3 cats and that the landlady was aware of it. When I confronted the landlady with this information and asked her to fumigate, she just mumbled something like, "Oh yeah, I forgot about the cats...oh well" and refused to fumigate. I couldn’t afford to do it myself and so I had to move. The problem was, I couldn’t wait to give appropriate notice because I was bitten up and down my legs, I couldn’t sleep and itwas driving me nuts!! I begged the landlady to let me off the hook with reference to the notice as I was suffering so much and she had misrepresented the situation to me. She actually had the nerve to deny doing this and said she had no recollection of my asking her any questions at all about pets before I moved in. I even placed an ad of my own and found her perspective tenants, but she refused to rent to them, saying she preferred to find tenants herself. I guess I could have stayed and fought her,but I couldn’t sleep and I was constantly itchy, so I moved. When she took me to court for my damage deposit because I hadn’t given sufficient notice, I told the court what had happened, but they totally sided with her because I couldn’t prove that she’d made that promise. So she got to keep my damage deposit. I even found out that she’d rented the apartment again as soon as I moved out, but she didn’t mention that in court (of course), and I didn’t know about it until about 2 weeks after we’d gone to court. I know that maybe this seems like not such a big deal to you, but it was to me. I just want some sort of justice, as this landlady really shouldn’t get away with treating people this way! Please send her a curse. |
| Oh landlady: "May a surprise housing inspection reveal serious structural defects in your apartment building that render the premises unsafe. May you be forced to pay all moving costs for all your tenants when they are able to prove,in a class-actionsuit, that you rented the premises knowing about the defects. May the large cash outlay from the mandatory repairs and tenant expenses make you so desperate for money that you are forced to sell the property at a huge loss. May the extreme stress of this situation give you hives, thus making you itchy without relief and preventing you from sleeping until such a time as you have learned the error of your ways." |
